In 2010, Utah state lawmaker, Rep. Carl Wimmer, proposed naming the Browning model 1911 .45-caliber handgun as the official state firearm. Designed by Utah gunmaker John Moses Browning, the model was utilized in many wars and has a rich historical association with the state. Although some anti-gun-violence groups raised concerns, they saw no significant harm in the designation.
